Dan Icolari's article on the Aural Waterway

I really liked this article. Dan is right. Much of our waterfront is available to us only through our ears. The boardwalk and the fishing pier are great, but you can't get down to the waterfront in most other areas, without slipping through breached fences or risking a cut foot from dodging broken glass and rusted nails. The exceptions are the little strip of beach in front of Alice Austen House, the stone beach area next to the Conference, the Gateway National Park marina and beach, and the promenade by the St. George Ferry Terminal, where the "Postcards" Memorial is. A lot of our sense of "islandness" really does come from what we hear—especially at night.
