"Playing real fences [and] walls outside a concert hall environment responses to all the factors in play including weather, wildlife and occasionally law enforcement but equally as important…is the playing itself.”

— Glenn Weyant , on “playing” the US/Mexican border fence

Unusual Instruments:
The Wall Piano

“I didn't have many toys to play with when I was little.... There was a blank wall beside the TV set. I always wanted to know how to play the piano and I liked to pretend to play when there was piano music on the telly. Man… I was weird. I was thinking that it could be much more fun to play piano on the wall and dance on the floor at the same time.... About 15 years later, I realized I had the skills to make it become possible.”

A computer “hears” taps / bangs on the wall through microphones. A software program translates these into the notes of 88 piano keys. Hard hits make louder notes; soft taps make soft notes. See a video here.

—Hon Lam Li , from the Creative Review.
