“Sound is about Place. Locality…we all depend on technology but mechanical sounds disconnect us aurally from our communities, wipe out natural sounds.”

— Hildegard Westerkamp

What sounds don’t you hear on Staten Island anymore?

“The Good Humor Truck, the red tool sharpener truck, early morning birds, lawn mowers ... kids playing stickball and jump rope, squeaky brakes on an old mercedes, quiet snow falling while neighbors talk, neighborhood parties while your parents thought you were sleeping, blue light specials at Kresge's, horses at the stables, ice cream shakes being made at Silver Lake Golf Course, church bells at night, transistor radios, 8-track tapes playing in the car, (vinyl) record pops and crackles, a needle falling onto a record album, fire crackling in a fire place, milk bottles being delivered at your back door ... baseball cards in the spokes of a bicycle wheel, crickets at night, baseball cards being flipped during a game.”
